A country where disaster is part of the calendar
Bangladesh is one of the most disaster-prone countries in the world. In extreme years nearly 70 percent of the country can be under water, and at least 15 significant cyclones have struck since 1960.17
The southwest coast, where Gonali lies, has lived with this for a long time. When Cyclone Aila broke the coastal embankments in 2009 the sea flooded the fields of Satkhira,12 and in Tala, waterlogging in bad years has cut off whole villages for weeks.16
