Why education and healthcare come first in rural Bangladesh
In villages like Gonali, in Tala Upazila of Satkhira district, education is often out of reach. Our surveys suggest that more than half of children under 14 do not finish primary school. Poverty keeps children at home, long distances and the need to work take them out of class, and for children from the Dalit community, discrimination can make school an unwelcoming place.22,3
Health and learning cannot be separated. A child who drinks unsafe water, goes hungry or is ill cannot sit and learn, which is why our education work always travels together with nutrition, health awareness and clean water.

How Healthcare & Education works, step by step
Welcome the child
We welcome children who could not otherwise attend, from nursery to grade five, and talk with their families.
Give them what school needs
Books, bags, uniforms and learning materials, so that cost is never the reason a child stays home.
Teach the whole child
Reading, writing and maths, plus health, nutrition, hygiene, character and faith.
Stay beside them
Teachers and mentors follow each child’s progress, encourage the family and help them keep going.
A school in Gonali, Satkhira
The Gonali Yahweh Mission School began in an open field with 25 children. Today it teaches from nursery to grade five, six days a week, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., led by Joy Sarker with teachers Champa Sarkar and Eti Das and volunteer teacher Lipika Das.
