Why villages need more than aid
Lasting change in a place like Gonali means more than handing out help. Most families live on daily wages, average incomes are below Tk 5,000 a month, and the Dalit community faces exclusion from schools, better-paid work and public life.22
Across rural Bangladesh about one in five people, 20.5 percent, lived below the national poverty line in 2022, and 6.5 percent lived in extreme poverty.20 Community development goes after the causes: skills, health, dignity and neighbours who look out for one another.
